修学旅行でオーストラリアを訪れた中学生・高校生を対象に、昨年4月から12月にかけて実施された「第1回オーストラリア教育旅行フォト&エッセイコンクール」。今回は、ホストファミリーとの触れ合いを通して文化の違いを体感し、多くのことを学んだという英語の作品をご紹介します。

＜優秀賞＞「My home stay」
応募者：斎藤　駿さん（千葉県・市原中央高等学校2年）

I have learned many things by going to Australia. Even though this was my forth trip to Australia, I realized the huge cultural difference between Australia and Japan. I have learned many things on this trip, which can only be learned by doing a home stay.

My host father John was originally from New Zealand and he love to tell jokes. When I met him for the first time, I was overwhelmed by his accent and the speed he talks. I was a little scared of him but as soon as I get used to the atmosphere, I spent most of the time talking with John. He always made fun of me making mistake. It was a shame that I couldn't understand half of his jokes. And every time I looked confused he said, "Oh never mind. You don't get it." This was really shocking to me. I knew that he's not trying to be rude or anything but it really made me think of the cultural difference.

On my second last day at O'Donnel family, John's brother came to visit. John and his brother looked exactly the same which made me laugh. We both got used to each other instantly and I enjoyed the talk with John's brother and his family. When we were talking about religion in Japan, he suddenly asked me what I believe in. I said "I believe in nothing." Then he asked me, "Do you believe in god?" I knew he was Christian hesitated to answer because he looked so serious that if I tell a lie to him he would get real angry so I said "No." Then he started to give me a lecture of either god is there or not. How was the human made? By whom? Who made the world? How are you going to prove there's no god? "I don't know." I finally said. Then He looked really happy and said, "See? You can't prove that there is no god." This lecture was so confusing and too hard for me to understand, but I thought it was a good experience arguing with some who has another opinion, "I think I'll think it over night" I finally said.

But the only thing that I thought there was no difference between the countries was the kids. Australian kids smiles in the totally same way as Japanese kids do. I thought that kids do smile the same way all over the world.

This home stay had been a priceless experience for me, and I almost cried on my last supper at O'Donnels family. I felt lonely because I might not meet these people again in my life. Some day I hope to see them and I truly miss them all.

＜優秀賞＞「オーストラリアの思い出の中から次のステップへ！！」
応募者：雨宮大雅さん（山梨県・山梨学院大学付属中学校3年）

「空は青く、広く、そして何一つ日本と変わらないな。」僕はオーストラリアの青い空を見上げながら、今頃僕の家族はどうしているのだろうか、日本はどのようなことになっているのだろうかと思っていた。

オーストラリアに行って、違う言語、違う文化に触れ、そして何よりもオーストラリアの人々の心の広さ、温かさに触れ、多くのことを学んだ。

『英語』、それは今や、世界中の共通語として多くの人々に話され、とても重要な言語となっている。その英語を学ぶためにオーストラリアに行ったのだが、毎日のように授業で学習しているのにもかかわらず、なかなか言葉が出てこなかった。とても苦しく、悔しかった。なぜ授業ではすぐに文にできるような文が、話せないのか、とても不思議な感覚だった。僕はもっと英語を勉強しなければと思った。

狭い部屋の中にいると、考え方が偏ったり、一方向にしか行かないとはよく言うものだが、まさにそれが今回のオーストラリアに行き、理解できた気がする。とても広い大陸のオーストラリアに行き、考え方が豊かになったように感じるのは満更でもないようだ。実際、僕は帰国してから物事を様々な方向から見れるようになった気がする。例えば、一つのニュースでも日本からの目線、海外からの目線と二つの見方ができるようなになった。

このように、オーストラリアから学んだことは星の数のように多く、とても数え切れたものではない。本当に感謝という言葉でしかお礼が言えない。僕にはこのオーストラリアで学んだことを次の世代に伝えていく義務があると思う。そして、苦しく、悔しい思いをした分、もっと英語という言語を学習し、機会があれば、海外に行ったときに、しっかりと話せるように日々、怠らず努力をし続け、精進していこうと思う。

＜優秀賞＞「Nature that supports our future」

-Through the experience of staying in Australia-

I went to Australia to stay for a year in 2009 and have known and learnt a lot of things through this valuable experience. We can "know" things of other countries in Japan, but we can't "learn" about them well directly. I would like to tell one thing that was especially impressive for me. It is about "nature".

Nature is one of the things I like the best in Australia. I could perceive and experience it because my host family took me to a lot of places. They are not only well-known places but also unwell-know places. But I found the workings of nature everywhere. Experiencing Australian beautiful nature was my hope before I started staying in Australia. I experienced Australian nature in various places, but I got the impression most in the trip to Great Ocean Road. So I would like to talk about it first.

Great Ocean Road is famous as the most beautiful coastline in Australia. There are a lot of strangely shaped, beautiful and mystic rocks I heard that they all occurred by the power of nature and no humans added their hands. What I saw besides weird shaped rocks was a lot of animals. There were various animals native to Australian such as a kangaroo, wallaby, kookaburra, echidna etc.

At this opportunity, I thought about Australian nature. I haven't seen so many kinds of animals in Japan. Japan used to have a rich nature, but we lost most of it because of the advances in technology. However, is Japan the only country that has developed? Australia has developed, too. So how are they keeping their rich nature? I think that is because they are exerting themselves to protect it. Australia's quarantine is very strict to protect their peculiar ecosystem. I think Japan's effort to save nature was not enough. But I'm sure we can still make an effort to save nature. We can't lose anything any more.

I have one thing that I would like to tell everybody. Please think about that we are allowed to live by nature. Everything we eat comes from nature. So it is time to show our gratitude to it. We also have to do it for the future of Earth. Australia is really important country for me because it taught me this important issue of the day that we have to start considering as soon as possible.

＜最優秀賞＞「朝、ケアンズの道路にて」
応募者：辨野真理さん（大阪府・関西大学第一中学校３年）

この写真の中央の標識に書かれている英語は、「GIVE WAY」直訳すると、「道をあげる」という意味になる。この写真は、私がオーストラリア語学研修中に通った語学スクール「KAPLAN Aspect｣前で、撮った写真である。朝、点呼と健康チェックが終わった後、学校が始まるまでの間に私は、ふと目にした「GIVE WAY」の標識が気に入って、カメラをかまえた。

「道をあげる」ってどんな意味なのかを今回、大変お世話になった添乗員さんに質問すると、日本の「止まれ」に似た、「向こうの方が優先なので道をゆずれ」という意味であることがわかった。日本の「止まれ」とは少しニュアンスが違うように感じた。

私が英語研修に行ったケアンズという街の人々は日本人、特に大阪人と少し雰囲気が違う。まず、街に出て気づくのは、走っている人や早歩きの人がいないことだ。現地の人に話を聞くと、「ここに来て数年たつけど、走っている人はあまり見ないかな。走ってると"何事！？"って見られる時もあるよ。」と笑って話してくれた。

また、車道がパリの凱旋門前のような道があった。これは昔、馬車が通っていた名残だそうだ。
他にも日本の山道の「鹿注意」の標識のように、「カンガルー注意」（これは実際に見た。）そして、「コアラ注意」なんてものもオーストラリアには存在する。

車道や道路標識にも、国柄、地域色がでているように思う。

日本の「止まれ」とオーストラリアの「GIVE WAY」。どことなく、ゆったりした、せかせか感のない、自主性がある感じが「ケアンズ」っぽく、この標識が私は好きだ。

＜優秀賞＞「深く理解りたくなった国」
応募者：田中藍子さん（兵庫県・滝川第二高等学校２年）

オーストラリアでのファームステイ中、私は何回思ったことをそのままの意味で伝えることができただろうか。「伝えること」それは英語力の乏しい私にとって、学校で習う英文法を完璧にこなすということではなかった。言葉はあくまでツール。数少ない語彙とジェスチャー、表情を駆使して全身で「言葉」ではなく「思い」を伝える。そこまでしても伝えきれない思いも多く、何度も悔しい思いをした。もし英語がペラペラに話せたならば、ホストファミリーが伝えたいことを理解し、彼らの文化をより奥深く感じることができたはずだ。

その時気づいた。学校で学ぶ英語はその入口にあるのだと。つまり他言語を学ぶという行為が異文化理解の扉を開くということだ。クラスメイト全員で受ける英語の授業であっても、そこには文化の違う対貴方、君と理解し合いたいという気持ち、一対一実現の基礎がある。その動機づけが大切であるということを学んだ。それはオーストラリアでの、あたたかい人々との出会いや、長い時間を経て育まれてきた文化を大好きになったからこそ気づけたことだ。この国に愛着が湧けば湧くほど、言葉の壁をどうにか無くしたいと思った。

異文化の相互い理解をしようとする際、もちろん日本の文化を伝える機会も重要だった。しかし私は日本の歴史、誇れる文化についてあまりにも無知だった。日本を語れない日本人が外国に行けば、その人は無国籍も同然、多文化に触れる資格はないのかもしれない。何よりもそんな空っぽの日本人と意思疎通したいと思う外国人はいないだろう。だが、まさしく私は「日本をしらない日本人」それに近かった。

今後の高校生活では今回気づけた学ぶ意味を大切に、たくさんの知識を吸収していこうと思う。そして将来、大好きになったオーストラリアでもう一度英語を通し、今度は価値ある異文化コミュニケーションの機会を持つことを目標にしようと思う。
